A Hamiltonian that is of even power in the momenta ensures the convergence of path integrals and hence satisfies a necessary condition for quantization. A Hamiltonian quadratic and linear in the momenta has in addition the right dimension and allows for a dimensionless coupling constant which is crucial for renormalization—in complete analogy to all SU ( N ) (N) gauge theories. Otherwise, the Hamiltonian does not provide a closed set of field equations. Hence, the final Hamiltonian of geometrodynamics is at least quadratic in the conjugate momenta of the gauge fields—which is beyond the Einstein-Hilbert theory of General Relativity [see K.S.
