Note that the gap function ( E n + 1 , 𝐤 − E n 𝐤 ) 2 (E_{n+1,{\bf k}}-E_{n{\bf k}})^{2} is differentiable everywhere in the BZ, including at degeneracy points where the bands disperse linearly in one or more directions.
