The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for the lepton flavor violating process $Z \rightarrow e \mu$ in pp collisions using 20.3 $fb^{-1}$ of data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV.

ATLAS uses a right-handed coordinate system with its origin at the nominal interaction point (IP) in the center of the detector and the z z -axis along the beam pipe. The x x -axis points from the IP to the center of the LHC ring, and the y y -axis points upward. Cylindrical coordinates ( r , ϕ ) (r,\phi) are used in the transverse plane, ϕ \phi being the azimuthal angle around the beam pipe. The pseudorapidity is defined in terms of the polar angle θ \theta as η = − l n tan ( θ / 2 ) \eta=-\mathop{ln}\nolimits\textrm{tan}(\theta/2) . Transverse momentum and energy are defined relative to the beamline as p T = p s i n θ p_{\mathrm{T}}=p\mathop{sin}\nolimits\theta and E T = E s i n θ E_{\rm{T}}=E\mathop{sin}\nolimits\theta
