In a recent paper arXiv:0910.2230, Khoury and Steinhardt proposed a way to generate adiabatic cosmological perturbations with a nearly flat spectrum in a contracting Universe.

It was suggested in Creminelli:2008wc that one might avoid the problems of the new ekpyrotic scenario discussed in Kallosh:2007ad by using an approach to the effective field theory with higher derivatives proposed in Weinberg:2008hq . Ref. Weinberg:2008hq suggested to use iterations, initially solving equations of the theory omitting the higher derivative terms, and then substituting the solutions to the higher derivative terms. This proposal works for a large class of theories where omission of the higher-derivative terms does not lead to pathologies. However, it does not help in the case of the new ekpyrotic scenario because this scenario, with the higher derivative being omitted, exhibits a catastrophic gradient instability Kallosh:2007ad
