The inspiration for this name (given by Kostelecký) comes from the real-life bumblebees. For a long time it was thought that with their large bodies and little wings it was theoretically impossible for them to fly, and yet they do. Similarly, in bumblebee models the usual theoretical explanation for massless photons, local U(1) gauge invariance, does not apply. Nonetheless, massless NG modes do propagate (as photons in the KS models) due to the spontaneous Lorentz violation in these models
