The most popular algorithm for the nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) uses the dilation of a kernel $\phi$ to spread (or interpolate) between given nonuniform points and a uniform upsampled grid, combined with an FFT and diagonal scaling (deconvolution) in frequency space.
