Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have shown that relativistic collisionless magnetic reconnection drives nonthermal particle acceleration (NTPA), potentially explaining high-energy (X-ray/$\gamma$-ray) synchrotron and/or inverse Compton (IC) radiation observed from various astrophysical sources.
