We propose and apply a new approach to determining $|V_{us}|$ using dispersion relations with weight functions having poles at Euclidean (space-like) momentum which relate strange hadronic $\tau$ decay distributions to hadronic vacuum polarization functions (HVPs) obtained from lattice QCD.
