We report variational Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice in the presence of both nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic superexchange couplings.
