In practice it can be difficult to know if the coincidences formed are independent, however as long as they are related to the true number of independent trials by an overall scaling, one can adjust the number so that it agrees with the observed rate of coincidences for low significance events. This works because GW are very rare and true signals will vastly underwhelm the false positives that a pipeline produces at high FAP . Thus the bias in calibrating M M to high FAP events is very small
