Distributions sensitive to the underlying event are studied in events containing one or more charged-particle jets produced in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

ATLAS uses a right-handed coordinate system with its origin at the nominal interaction point (IP) in the center of the detector and the z z -axis along the beam pipe. The x x -axis points from the IP to the center of the LHC ring, and the y y axis points upward. Cylindrical coordinates ( r , ϕ ) (r,\phi) are used in the transverse plane, ϕ \phi being the azimuthal angle around the beam pipe. The pseudorapidity is defined in terms of the polar angle θ \theta as η = − ln tan ( θ / 2 ) \eta=-\mathop{ln}\nolimits\mathop{tan}\nolimits(\theta/2) . The transverse momentum p T p_{\mathrm{T}} is defined as p T ≡ E 2 − m 2 sin ( θ ) p_{\mathrm{T}}\equiv\sqrt{E^{2}-m^{2}}\mathop{sin}\nolimits(\theta) , where E E is the total energy and m is the mass
