The rapidity y y and pseudorapidity η \eta of a particle are defined as functions of the polar angle θ \theta with respect to the proton beam direction and velocity β \beta as y ( θ , β ) ≡ 1 2 ln [ ( 1 + β cos θ ) / ( 1 − β cos θ ) ] y(\theta,\beta)\equiv{\frac{1}{2}}\ln{[(1+\beta\cos{\theta})/(1-\beta\cos{\theta})]} and η ( θ ) ≡ y ( θ , 1 ) \eta(\theta)\equiv y(\theta,1) , where β \beta is the ratio of a particle’s momentum to its energy. We distinguish detector η \eta ( η det \eta_{\text{det}} ) and collision η \eta , where the former is defined with respect to the center of the detector and the latter with respect to the p p ¯ p\bar{p}
