Strictly speaking, this type of topological protection is imperfect, in the sense that node mixing is possible by a perturbation, which has a nonzero Fourier component at the momentum, separating the Weyl nodes. In practice, this is not a significant restriction. The main type of perturbation, that will be present in experimental systems, in disorder potential. This will, in general, have a nonzero Fourier component at any momentum. However, as long as this Fourier component has a zero mean, as one would expect for a random potential, it will not open a gap
