The propagation of an electrostatic wave packet inside a collisionless and initially Maxwellian plasma is always dissipative because of the irreversible acceleration of the electrons by the wave.

As in Ref. [ 21 ] , we are using here an approximate version of Whitham’s variational approach, neglecting the time and space derivatives of k k and ω \omega , whose impact on the group velocity, for example, is beyond the scope of this paper devoted to the effect of collisionless dissipation. The numerical results of Refs. [ 14 , 21 , 18 ] showed that our approximation was quite accurate, both as regards the free propagation of a plasma wave packet and the application to stimulated Raman scattering, at least for the physics parameters chosen in the cited papers, which are relevant to inertial confinement fusion
