ATLAS uses a right-handed coordinate system with its origin at the nominal interaction point in the centre of the detector and the z z -axis along the beam pipe. The x x -axis points from the interaction point to the centre of the LHC ring, and the y y -axis points upwards. Cylindrical coordinates ( r r , ϕ \phi ) are used in the transverse plane, ϕ \phi being the azimuthal angle around the beam pipe. The pseudorapidity η \eta is defined in terms of the polar angle θ \theta as η = − l n t a n ( θ / 2 ) \eta=-\mathop{ln}\nolimits\mathop{tan}\nolimits(\theta/2)
