This letter reports the first direct observation of muon antineutrino disappearance.

The MINOS experiment has taken data with an accelerator beam optimized for muon antineutrino production, accumulating an exposure of $1.71\times 10^{20}$ protons on target.
In the Far Detector, 97 charged current muon antineutrino events are observed.
The no-oscillation hypothesis predicts 156 events and is excluded at $6.3\sigma$.

The experiment measures an unresolved mixture of | Δ m 31 2 | |\Delta m^{2}_{31}| and | Δ m 32 2 | |\Delta m^{2}_{32}| , which is referred to as | Δ m 2 | |\Delta m^{2}| for brevity. The parameter sin 2 ⁡ ( 2 θ ) \sin^{2}(2\theta) is likewise an admixture, dominated by θ 23 \theta_{23} . Similarly for | Δ m ¯ 2 | |\Delta\overline{m}^{2}| and sin 2 ⁡ ( 2 θ ¯ ) \sin^{2}(2\overline{\theta})
