ATLAS uses a right-handed coordinate system with its origin at the nominal interaction point in the center of the detector. Cylindrical coordinates ( r , ϕ ) (r,\phi) are used in the transverse plane, ϕ \phi being the azimuthal angle around the beam axis. The pseudorapidity is defined in terms of the polar angle θ \theta as η = − ln tan ( θ / 2 ) \eta=-\ln\tan(\theta/2) . Rapidity is defined as y = 1 2 ln [ ( E + p z ) / ( E − p z ) ] y=\frac{1}{2}\ln[(E+p_{z})/(E-p_{z})] , where E E is the energy and p z p_{z} is the longitudinal component of the momentum along the beam direction
